In New Zealand there is a threat of our water supplies being contaminated with bacteria and protozoa - causing waterborne diseases, particularly in private water supplies.
Common waterborne diseases are caused by Cryptosporidia and Giardia, types of protozoa, resulting in a number of unpleasant symptoms such as diarrhoea and loss of appetite. Another common waterborne disease is found when water is contaminated with E. coli bacteria, leading to similar symptoms.
Bacteria and protozoa therefore need to be removed from every water supply system – every household, school and water-reliant industry.
